Cane/ Bamboo handicrafts of North East are acknowledged to be among the best in the country, due to their beauty, elegance and exquisite designs. A vast range of items are produced, including Furniture, Panels and Partitions, Table & other Mat products, Lamp Shades etc. Bamboo and cane Ornaments are also very intricate and exquisite in nature. Bamboo and cane ornaments are not available in any other part of the country as well as abroad. North East handicrafts are also being exported to various countries. The natural, durable and attractive bamboo not only makes mats, baskets and other handicraft but is also used for high-grade packaging, decorative panels, curtains and window blinds. The bamboo window blinds, in fact, not only give a classic touch to the interior decor of a room but keep it cool as well. Bamboo craft is based on its specific weaving techniques.

Bamboo products prevalent in the region can be categorized in four broad heads according to the production using bamboo splits. Loom-based products (Bamboo Stick mat), Interlaced bamboo products, Constructed products and Fine handicrafts.

Loom-based product is the combination of textile and bamboo material where the percentage of textile and bamboo material varies. It includes bamboo splits / sticks being woven on the pit looms / frame looms / machine looms from which different products like table mats, panel screens, side mats, decorative pieces like fans, trays and others are being developed. Bamboo splits of varying thickness are woven into cotton or nylon warps to form mats which can be further developed into products of day to day utility. The strategy was utilized in Agartala to develop wide variety of products.

The craft of making bamboo slivers for further weaving into baskets is very prevalent all across region. The basic material for all the products is bamboo slivers which is traditionally woven by hand to form baskets of varied size and shapes. In Itanagar, the same techniques were utilized to develop basketry based on new designs.

Rattans or cane are a versatile natural material used for making various utility items such as furniture and basketry. Our intervention in Guwahati was centered on utility items from Indian cane along with jewelry. Various containers and lamp shade prototypes were developed during the project. The products were as per market trends and had an antique look.
